The following post was recently noticed on the Tongariro River Motel Daily Report website September 2010.
Fishing Report
(Aerial photos taken in September 2009)
Some excellent fishing is forecast for the weekend.
That is probably all you need to know…?
Now some new high techie fishy equipment comments. Recently we have had two anglers at TRM with new Australian “sample rods” to test them out on the Tongariro River, as this is considered a good test due to the need for long casts hurling heavy bombs – i.e. heavily weighted hare & copper nymphs that we fling at the trout. There is no truth in the rumour that these are used to actually stun the trout but there have certainly been loads of keen trout willing to test them. The extra weight of nymphs is necessary to penetrate and probe the depths of some of the deeper pools and trawl the river bottom where the fresh run spawning trout seem to prefer to team up – i.e. Poutu Pool – where anglers are seen using traces below their indicators of 18-20 feet or more.
The first angler is Garth James from Adelaide who has been trialling a new 7 wt “WILD CREEK” rod – see above – for owner/designer Neil Charter. Garth’s verdict is this rod is equally at home with a 200 grain shooting head or a pair of heavy nymphs and at the RRP (of under $300) is astounding value for money.
The second angler is Paul Bright from Victoria who is testing a new rod from “PRO ANGLER” But he complained that all his big fresh run trout up at Blue Pool broke off…
And for all the cynics out there the answer is NO! TRM and Garth do not have any financial interest in Wild Creek Rods..etc.
TRM’s only concern is that Garth’s rod could be worn out after the last 2 weeks. Other TRM angler inmates leaving today mentioned that over the last week they have enjoyed their most productive fishing ever – after visiting TRM during the winter runs for many years. There are so many stories this week of double figures (that is over 10 landed per day – not over 10 pound!) that TRM cannot cover them all. Even Boof had to have a rest yesterday.
